Hadith Commentary:
Allah the Exalted accepted both of the supplications of Hazrat Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu.
On Wednesday, the 26th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 23 AH, while he was leading the dawn (fajr) prayer, the oppressor Abu Lu’lu’ah the Magian struck him with a poisoned dagger. The wound was fatal, and after a few days he passed away. On Saturday, the 1st of Muharram, 24 AH, the burial took place. Allah the Exalted accepted his second supplication in such a magnificent manner that he was buried right in the chamber of the Prophet (hujrah nabawiyyah), beside the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
(“That is the bounty of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.”)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The background of this supplication is described as follows: Hazrat ‘Awf bin Malik Ashja‘i radi Allahu anhu saw in a dream that Sayyiduna ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu had been martyred. He related this dream to Hazrat ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, who, in a tone filled with longing, said:
“How can martyrdom in the path of Allah (shahadah fi sabilillah) be granted to me when I reside in the midst of the Arabian Peninsula? I myself do not go out for jihad, and Allah’s servants are always around me.”
Then he himself said:
“Why should martyrdom not be granted to me? If Allah wills, He will bestow martyrdom upon me even in these circumstances.”
After this, he made the supplication mentioned above.
Upon hearing this supplication, his daughter, Umm al-Mu’minin Hazrat Hafsah radi Allahu anha, said:
“How is it possible that you are martyred in the path of Allah and that too in Madinah?” He replied:
“If Allah wills, both these things will happen.”
(2)
It is also mentioned in the narrations that people were astonished by this strange and remarkable supplication of Hazrat ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, and no one could understand how both these things could occur. But when the wretched Abu Lu’lu’ah wounded him in the mihrab of Masjid al-Nabawi, people realized that the acceptance of the supplication had been destined in this manner.
Allah Ta‘ala granted Hazrat ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu’s supplication acceptance, word for word. Thus, in Madinah Munawwarah, on Wednesday, 26th Dhu al-Hijjah, 23 AH, while leading the Fajr prayer, he was martyred and was buried in the blessed chamber (hujrah mubarakah) alongside the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
(Fath al-Bari: 4/131)
O Allah! Grant us too the death of martyrdom in the beloved city of Your Prophet, Madinah Tayyibah.
And that is not difficult for Allah, and He is over all things competent.
