Hadith 1863

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَبِيبٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا رَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ حَجَّتِهِ ، قَالَ لِأُمِّ سِنَانٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ : مَا مَنَعَكِ مِنَ الْحَجِّ ؟ قَالَتْ : أَبُو فُلَانٍ تَعْنِي زَوْجَهَا ، كَانَ لَهُ نَاضِحَانِ حَجَّ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمَا ، وَالْآخَرُ يَسْقِي أَرْضًا لَنَا ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عُمْرَةً فِي رَمَضَانَ تَقْضِي حَجَّةً ، أَوْ حَجَّةً مَعِي " ، رَوَاهُ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ : عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When the Prophet returned after performing his Hajj, he asked Um Sinan Al-Ansari, "What did forbid you to perform Hajj?" She replied, "Father of so-and-so (i.e. her husband) had two camels and he performed Hajj on one of them, and the second is used for the irrigation of our land." The Prophet said (to her), "Perform `Umra in the month of Ramadan, (as it is equivalent to Hajj or Hajj with me (in reward).

Hadith Commentary:
The narration of Ubaydullah from Abdulkarim has been connected (mawsul) by Ibn Majah. The purpose of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah in mentioning these chains is to show that the narrators have differed regarding Ata. Ibn Abi Ma‘la and Ya‘qub ibn Ata have also narrated in the same manner as Habib Mu‘allim and Ibn Jurayj. It is thus evident that the narration of Abdulkarim is irregular (shadh) and not worthy of consideration.

The woman mentioned in the hadith is Umm Sinan radi Allahu anha, who was deprived of performing Hajj with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Hajj was not even obligatory upon her, but the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in order to console her, said that if she performs ‘umrah in Ramadan, it will compensate for that deprivation. From this, the virtue of performing ‘umrah in Ramadan is also established.
