Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet said, "A woman should not travel except with a Dhu-Mahram (her husband or a man with whom that woman cannot marry at all according to the Islamic Jurisprudence), and no man may visit her except in the presence of a Dhu-Mahram." A man got up and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I intend to go to such and such an army and my wife wants to perform Hajj." The Prophet said (to him), "Go along with her (to Hajj).

Hadith Commentary:
In this narration, travel in general is mentioned, while in other narrations, the specification of a journey of three days, two days, and one day is found.
In any case, for a journey of one day and night, a woman may not travel without a mahram (unmarriageable kin).
Our Imam, Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah, states that if a woman does not find a husband or any other mahram relative, then Hajj is not obligatory upon her. The Hanafis hold the same opinion. However, the Shafi'is and Malikis consider it permissible for a woman to go for Hajj with trustworthy and reliable companions.
