Narrated Aisha (mother of the faithful believers): I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shouldn't we participate in Holy battles and Jihad along with you?" He replied, "The best and the most superior Jihad (for women) is Hajj which is accepted by Allah." `Aisha added: Ever since I heard that from Allah's Apostle I have determined not to miss Hajj.

Hadith Commentary:
The intent of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was that going out for jihad is not obligatory upon you as it is upon men.
The meaning of this hadith is not that women should not accompany the mujahideen.
Rather, they can go, because in the hadith of Umm Atiyyah (radi Allahu anha) it is mentioned that we used to go out for jihad and would tend to the wounded, etc., and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave glad tidings to a woman that she would be martyred along with the mujahideen.
