Hadith 1854

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: Al-Fadl was riding behind the Prophet and a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came up. Al-Fadl started looking at her and she looked at him. The Prophet turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. She said, "My father has come under Allah's obligation of performing Hajj but he is a very old man and cannot sit properly on his Mount. Shall I perform Hajj on his behalf? The Prophet replied in the affirmative. That happened during Hajjat-al-Wada` of the Prophet .

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that an incapable (disabled) person can appoint a deputy (na'ib) to perform Hajj on his behalf, and for the one who is himself capable of performing Hajj, deputizing someone else to perform Hajj on his behalf is not valid.
If his incapacity is such that he cannot travel far, then in such circumstances, he should appoint someone as his deputy to fulfill the obligation of Hajj.

(2)
Imam Bukhari did not mention the wording of the hadith narrated from Hazrat Fadl bin Abbas (radi Allahu anhu).
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has mentioned them:
A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said that Hajj has become obligatory upon my elderly father in such a state that he cannot sit on a camel.
Can I perform Hajj on his behalf? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
"You perform Hajj on his behalf."
