Hadith Commentary:
This does not mean that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed the make-up (qada) of the previous ‘umrah, rather, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed a second ‘umrah the following year. Some have said that in the state of being prevented (ihsar), it is obligatory to make up (qada) that Hajj or ‘umrah, and that this ‘umrah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the make-up for the previous ‘umrah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah omitted the background of this hadith because it did not meet his conditions. The background is as follows: Abdullah bin Rafi', the freed slave of Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha, asked Hajjaj bin Amr al-Ansari about what one should do if, while in the state of ihram, he is prevented from reaching the House of Allah. He narrated the statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: "Whoever becomes lame, or his bone is broken, or he is prevented (from proceeding), then he should exit from ihram and perform it (the ritual) the following year."

Abdullah bin Rafi' says that he mentioned this to Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, and he affirmed it. Then he narrated this incident to Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, who said: "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was prevented (from reaching the Ka'bah), so he shaved his head, slaughtered the sacrificial animal, and had relations with his wives, then the following year he performed a (new) 'umrah." (Fath al-Bari: 11/4)

(2)
It is also understood from this hadith that whoever exits from ihram due to some hindrance is required to make it up the following year, whereas according to the majority of scholars, doing so is not obligatory. We will discuss this matter further ahead.
