Hadith 1803

Narrated Abu 'Is-haq: I heard Al-Bara' saying, "The above Verse was revealed regarding us, for the Ansar on returning from Hajj never entered their houses through the proper doors but from behind. One of the Ansar came and entered through the door and he was taunted for it. Therefore, the following was revealed: -- "It is not righteousness That you enter the houses from the back, But the righteous man is He who fears Allah, Obeys His order and keeps away from What He has forbidden So, enter houses through the proper doors." Hadith Commentary:
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), apart from the Quraysh, the common poor people considered it disgraceful to enter their homes through the doors upon returning from Hajj, and they regarded the shadow of the door falling upon their heads as an ill omen. Therefore, they would climb over the walls of their houses to enter.
The Noble Qur’an refuted this erroneous notion.
The Ansari who is mentioned in the narration as the one who came was Qutbah bin Amir al-Ansari.
In the narration of Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Hakim, this is explicitly stated, and his name is given as Rifā‘ah bin Tābūt.
The aforementioned verse of the Noble Qur’an contains an exposition of fundamental Islamic matters.
Regarding the details of the elder who came, Hafiz Ibn Hajar states:
“In the two Sahihs, through the route of ‘Ammar bin Zurayq from al-A‘mash from Abu Sufyan from Jabir, it is narrated: The Quraysh were called al-Hums, and they would enter through the doors while in the state of ihram, and the Ansar and the rest of the Arabs would not enter through the doors while in ihram. Rather, they would climb over the back wall to enter their homes. One day, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came out of a garden through its door, and Qutbah bin Amir al-Ansari came out with him through the door as well. The people then began to reproach him, even calling him a wicked man, saying: ‘Qutbah is a wicked man, for he came out with you through the door.’ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) asked him: ‘What made you do that?’ He replied: ‘I saw you do it, so I did as you did.’ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘I am a Hums (i.e., of the Quraysh).’ He replied: ‘Indeed, my religion is your religion.’ Then Allah revealed the verse.”
(Fath al-Bari)
That is, the Quraysh were called al-Hums, and only they, according to the belief of the era of ignorance, could enter their homes through the doors while in the state of ihram. The Ansar, and indeed all the Arabs, if they returned home in the state of ihram, would not enter through the door but would climb over the back wall to enter.
One day, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came out of a garden through its door, and Qutbah bin Amir al-Ansari also came out with him through the door.
At this, people began to reproach him, even calling him a wicked man.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) asked him: “Why did you do this?” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), I saw you do it, so I did it in following you.” The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “I am a Hums (i.e., of the Quraysh).” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah, the religion of Islam which is yours is also mine.”
Upon this, this noble verse was revealed.

Hadith Commentary:
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), except for the Quraysh, people after completing Hajj, when returning to their homes, considered it improper to enter through the door of the house. In fact, if the shadow of the door fell upon their heads, they regarded it as an ill omen. For this reason, they would climb over the walls of their houses to enter.
Allah Ta'ala refuted this erroneous notion through this noble verse.
