Hadith 1802

Narrated Humaid: Anas said, "Whenever Allah's Apostle returned from a journey, he, on seeing the high places of Medina, would make his she-camel proceed faster; and if it were another animal, even then he used to make it proceed faster." Narrated Humaid that the Prophet used to make it proceed faster out of his love for Medina. Narrated Anas: As above, but mentioned "the walls of Medina" instead of "the high places of Medina. Al-Harith bin `Umar agrees with Anas.

Hadith Commentary: Hafiz Sahib (rahimahullah) states that from the conduct of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the legitimacy of love for one’s homeland is established. It is a natural inclination for a person to love the place where he is born, and even during travel, the longing for one’s homeland remains.

In short, love for one’s homeland is a natural matter and is not blameworthy in Islam. There is a well-known saying: “Love of the homeland is part of faith.” Love for one’s homeland is also included in faith.

“Jidarat” refers to the walls of the houses of Madinah; when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would catch sight of them, he would hasten his mount.

In some narrations, the word “duhat” appears, meaning when the trees of Madinah would come into view, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), out of love for his homeland, would quicken his mount.

Whenever he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) returned from any journey, whether Hajj, jihad, or otherwise, he would express his love in this manner.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In the narration where "jadrāt al-Madīnah" appears instead of "darajāt al-Madīnah," its meaning is "the buildings of Madinah." When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would see the buildings and houses of Madinah Tayyibah, due to the abundance of longing, he would hasten his mount. This demonstrates the virtue of Madinah Tayyibah. Furthermore, from this, the legitimacy of love for one’s homeland and emotional attachment to it is also established.

(2)
It is a natural matter for a person to love the place where he is born. In Islam, this love is not blameworthy; however, the hadith that "love for one’s homeland is part of faith" is entirely baseless. (: Fath al-Bari: 3/783) The narration with "jadrāt al-Madīnah" has itself been narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) with a connected chain. (: Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il al-Madinah, Hadith: 1886) Likewise, the corroboration of Harith ibn ‘Umayr has been narrated in a connected form by Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah). (: Musnad Ahmad: 3/159)

Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was a Makkan; his ancestral homeland was Makkah. However, after migrating to Madinah, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made it his true place of residence, and he strove so much for its population and development that his love became ingrained in the very veins of the people of Madinah. The people of Madinah, from the Aws and Khazraj tribes, never even imagined that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was from another place and had come there as an emigrant (muhajir).

The history of the Muslims shows that wherever they went in the footsteps of their beloved Messenger, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), they became residents of that land. Through their efforts, they brought prosperity to that country and made it their homeland forever.

Hundreds of such examples still exist today.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The result of this supplication of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that in that place, such satiety is attained from a single food or drink item that even by eating two or three items in other cities, such satiety is not achieved.

(2)
If the question arises that, according to the implication of this supplication, should not the reward for prayer in Madinah Tayyibah (the Prophet’s Mosque) be double that of the reward for prayer in Makkah Mukarramah (the Sacred Mosque)? The answer is that what is meant here is worldly blessing, just as the blessing of the sa‘ (a measure) and mudd (a smaller measure) refers to worldly blessing, or that, due to an external evidence, this blessing has been specified for prayer.

The corroboration of ‘Uthman ibn ‘Umar has been mentioned with a connected chain in the book ‘Ilal al-Hadith al-Zuhri.

Explanation:
1:
This love may be specific to "Madinah,"
and it is also possible that every person has love for his homeland (home),
so due to this love, anyone would hasten to reach his home just as the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to hasten to reach his home. (In any case, this will be a Sunnah of habit,
not a Sunnah of worship.)
