Hadith 1800

Narrated Anas: The Prophet never returned to his family from a journey at night. He used to return either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The term "ashiyy" applies to the time from the decline of the sun (zawal al-shams) until sunset (ghurub al-shams). It is also used for the time from sunset until the night prayer ('isha), but in this context, the first meaning is intended.

(2)
The meaning of the hadith is that upon returning from a journey, it is not necessary to enter one's home only in the morning, as has been mentioned under the previous heading; it is permissible to enter one's home in the morning or evening. However, it is prohibited to enter the home suddenly at night, lest in such a situation one becomes aware of some shortcoming of one's wife (such as disheveled hair, dirty clothes, etc.), which could lead to mutual discord. However, if the family is informed, then it is permissible to come at night as well.
