Hadith 1494

Narrated Um 'Atiyya Al-Ansariya: The Prophet went to `Aisha and asked her whether she had something (to eat). She replied that she had nothing except the mutton (piece) which Nusaiba (Um 'Atiyya) had sent to us (Buraira) in charity." The Prophet said, "It has reached its place and now it is not a thing of charity but a gift for us."

Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood from this that the wealth of charity (sadaqah) can, in this manner, also come into the possession of the affluent.
Because after it has become the property of a needy person, it can now be given by anyone on behalf of the poor person to someone else.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent a goat given as charity (sadaqah) to Umm Atiyyah, that is, Nusaybah (radi Allahu anha). She sent some of that meat as a gift (hadiyyah) to Aisha (radi Allahu anha). When Umm Atiyyah accepted this charity, it became her property, and it was no longer considered charity. Therefore, it was permissible for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to use it, which is why he said that it had reached its proper place.

(2)
From this hadith, it is understood that if the recipient of charity, of their own will, gives some of the charitable goods to a wealthy person (ghani) or a Hashimi, then it is permissible for the wealthy person or the Hashimi to accept it, because it is no longer under the definition of charity. It is now permissible to buy, sell, gift, or present it to someone else.
And Allah knows best.
