Hadith 1473

Allah the Exalted has said: In their wealth there is a share for the beggar and the deprived (who do not ask).
Narrated `Umar: Allah's Apostle used to give me something but I would say to him, "would you give it to a poorer and more needy one than l?" The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said to me, "Take it. If you are given something from this property, without asking for it or having greed for it take it; and if not given, do not run for it."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
It is permissible to accept what is given without asking, provided that the wealth is not unlawful (haram).
If it is certain to be haram, then it is not permissible to take it; if it is doubtful, then piety demands that one should also avoid such wealth. However, there is still some allowance for taking it in such cases.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has also referenced a verse.
Its connection to the hadith is as follows: Allah Ta'ala has praised the person who gives his wealth to both the one who asks and the one who does not ask. When the giver is praiseworthy in the sight of Allah Ta'ala, then accepting his gift and the one who receives it will not be blameworthy. The same subject is mentioned in the hadith.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/426)
In one narration, the reason for the hadith's occurrence is also mentioned: During the caliphate of Umar radi Allahu anhu, Abdullah bin Sa'di came to Madinah. Umar radi Allahu anhu said to him:
"I have been informed that you are appointed to serve the people collectively, but you dislike receiving the right of service for this."
He replied, "That is exactly the case, because I have an abundance of horses, slaves, and wealth and possessions. I desire to receive its reward from Allah."
Upon this, Umar radi Allahu anhu said:
"Do not do so." After that, he narrated the hadith which is mentioned.
There is this addition in it: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"When something reaches you without you asking for it and without greed, then consider it as wealth and give charity, etc., from it."
