And (in the Noble Qur’an is) «ومثل الذين ينفقون أموالهم» the example of those who spend their wealth, (to) the statement of the Lord «من كل الثمرات» up to.
Narrated Abu Mas`ud: When the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance. And they (the people) said, "He is showing off." And another man came and gave a Sa (a small measure of food grains); they said, "Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity." And then the Divine Inspiration came: "Those who criticize such of the believers who give in charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them." Hadith Commentary:
These wretched hypocrites who used to taunt others could never find peace in any situation.
When Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu) gave half of his wealth—eight thousand dirhams—in charity, they began to call him a show-off.
When Abu Aqil (radi Allahu anhu), a poor man, earned through hard labor and gave one sa‘ (approx. 2.5–3 kg) of dates in the way of Allah, they mocked him, saying that Allah had no need for such a small amount.
O accursed ones! Allah has no need for anything.
Whether it is eight thousand or even eighty million, before Him it is insignificant.
He looks at the intention of the heart.
Even one sa‘ of dates is a great amount.
If someone gives even a single date, sincerely and from lawful earnings, it is accepted by Allah.
It is mentioned in the Holy Gospel that an old woman gave a single coin in charity.
People laughed at her.
Isa (alayhis salam) said that this old woman’s charity surpasses yours.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
These wretched hypocrites were those who mocked and taunted. They could never find any peace in any situation. When Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu gave eight thousand dirhams in charity, they began to call him a show-off. And when Abu Aqil radi Allahu anhu, after working as a laborer, gave one sa‘ (approx. 2.5–3 kg) of dates as charity, they mocked him, saying, "What need does Allah have for this!" They do not realize that with Allah, it is not the quantity but the quality that holds value. There, the sincerity of the heart is what is considered; in its presence, even a single sa‘ of dates is significant.
(2)
In the hadith, the verse regarding charity refers to the following statement of Allah, the Exalted:
﴿خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّ صَلَاتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَّهُمْ ۗ وَاللَّـهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿١٠٣﴾) (al-Tawbah 9:103)
“(O Prophet!) Take charity from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and pray for them. Indeed, your prayer is a source of tranquility for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
