Hadith 1413

Narrated `Adi bin Hatim: While I was sitting with Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) two person came to him; one of them complained about his poverty and the other complained about the prevalence of robberies. Allah's Apostle said, "As regards stealing and robberies, there will shortly come a time when a caravan will go to Mecca (from Medina) without any guard. And regarding poverty, The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till one of you wanders about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it And (no doubt) each one of you will stand in front of Allah and there will be neither a curtain nor an interpreter between him and Allah, and Allah will ask him, 'Did not I give you wealth?' He will reply in the affirmative. Allah will further ask, 'Didn't send a messenger to you?' And again that person will reply in the affirmative Then he will look to his right and he will see nothing but Hell-fire, and then he will look to his left and will see nothing but Hell-fire. And so, any (each one) of you should save himself from the fire even by giving half of a date-fruit (in charity). And if you do not find a hall datefruit, then (you can do it through saying) a good pleasant word (to your brethren). (See Hadith No. 793 Vol. 4).

Hadith Commentary:
This too is a great charity, meaning that if one cannot give alms, then at least respond gently by saying, “At this time I am constrained, forgive me.” It is prohibited to quarrel at home.

A translator (tarjuman) is one who conveys the servant’s speech to Allah and communicates Allah’s command to the servant. In fact, Allah Most High Himself will speak.

This hadith refutes those who say that Allah’s speech has no sound or letters. If there were no sound or letters, then how would the servant hear and understand? (Wahidi)

This hadith also contains the prophecy that one day there will be widespread peace and security in Arabia, and thieves and bandits will generally be eliminated, to the extent that caravans will travel from the noble Makkah without a (khafīr).

A khafīr was a person who, in Arabia, would travel with a caravan from each tribe and safely escort them past the borders of his tribe, showing the way and protecting them from robbers.

Today, in this fourteenth century, the government of Saudi Arabia has made the Haramain Sharifain such an abode of peace that no one dares to assault another.

May Allah Most High keep this government established and always grant it dominance over the envious and the hostile.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In this hadith, it is stated that a man will go out with his charity, but he will not find anyone to accept it. Such circumstances will occur near the end of times (qurb-e-qiyamah), because one narration of the aforementioned hadith indicates that the abundance of wealth and riches did not occur during the lifetime of ‘Adi ibn Hatim radi Allahu anhu. He said: "If you live long enough, you will yourself witness the confirmation of the statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Manaqib, Hadith: 3595)
Because his death occurred during the rule of Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu, which was an era of conquests.
The hadith scholar Ibn al-Tin rahimahullah states that this era will be after the descent of ‘Isa alayhis salam, when there will not remain a single disbeliever on the face of the earth, and the blessings of the earth will be such that an entire family will be satiated from a single pomegranate.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/356)
(2)
Imam al-Bayhaqi rahimahullah has interpreted this as referring to the caliphate of ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz rahimahullah, whose reign lasted only thirty months, and during that period people became so wealthy that no one could be found to accept charity.
(Dala’il al-Nubuwwah lil-Bayhaqi, Bab: What has come regarding his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informing about the evil that will occur after the good, 6/493)
However, the opinion that this refers to the end of times appears to be more correct, because ‘Adi ibn Hatim radi Allahu anhu had said: "If your life is prolonged, you will see it," which indicates that the more likely interpretation is that it refers to the period near the end of times.
