Hadith 1408

He said, "These people do not understand anything, although my friend told me." I asked, "Who is your friend?" He said, "The Prophet said (to me), 'O Abu Dhar! Do you see the mountain of Uhud?' And on that I (Abu Dhar) started looking towards the sun to judge how much remained of the day as I thought that Allah's Apostle wanted to send me to do something for him and I said, 'Yes!' He said, 'I do not love to have gold equal to the mountain of Uhud unless I spend it all (in Allah's cause) except three Dinars (pounds). These people do not understand and collect worldly wealth. No, by Allah, Neither I ask them for worldly benefits nor am I in need of their religious advice till I meet Allah, The Honorable, The Majestic." '

Hadith Commentary:
Perhaps at that time you had a debt of three gold coins, or this was your daily expenditure.
Hafiz (rahimahullah) said that from this hadith it is derived that one should not accumulate wealth.
However, this is to be understood as a matter of preference, because even if someone who accumulates wealth gives zakat, he will still have to give account for it on the Day of Judgment.
Therefore, it is better that whatever comes, one should spend it, but not to such an extent that it contradicts the verses of the Noble Qur’an in which it is said:
(Bani Isra’il 17:29)
That is, do not open your hand so much that you end up empty-handed, sitting blameworthy and helpless.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself said that a time will come when it will be beneficial for a Muslim to have wealth in his hand in order to safeguard his faith.
For this reason, it has been said that sometimes poverty can turn a person into a disbeliever.
The summary is that the middle path is better.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In the narration of Musnad Ahmad, it is mentioned that Ahnaf bin Qais said:
I saw a man whom people did not like; rather, upon seeing him, they would run away from there.
I asked him:
Who are you? He replied:
I am Abu Dharr.
I asked: Why do people avoid you? He replied:
I forbid them from that treasure which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade.
(Musnad Ahmad: 5/164)

(2)
According to Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu), hoarding anything beyond one’s essential needs is unlawful (haram).
This characteristic of his will be understood not as obligatory (wujub), but as preferable (awlawiyyah), because even if a person who accumulates wealth pays its zakah, he will still have to give account for it on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore, it is better that whatever comes, he spends it in the way of Allah, but he should also not be so excessive in this that he violates the Qur’anic verse:
The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
(Bani Isra’il 17:29)
“And do not stretch out your hand to its utmost extent, lest you sit down blamed and destitute.”
Other benefits related to this hadith will be mentioned in the Book of Heart-Softening (Kitab al-Riqaq), Hadith: 6445,
insha’Allah.
