Narrated Abu Aiyub: A man said to the Prophet "Tell me of such a deed as will make me enter Paradise." The people said, "What is the matter with him? What is the matter with him?" The Prophet said, "He has something to ask. (What he needs greatly) The Prophet said: (In order to enter Paradise) you should worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, offer prayer perfectly, pay the Zakat and keep good relations with your Kith and kin." (See Hadith No. 12, Vol 8).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that the indication of this hadith for the obligation of zakat is a cause of much confusion. Then he himself has given several answers, for example:
The obligation (fardiyyah) of zakat is established from this hadith in such a way that entering Paradise is dependent upon the payment of zakat.
This means that whoever does not give zakat will go to Hell, and going to Hell occurs due to abandoning something that is obligatory (wajib).
In this way, the obligation of zakat is established from this hadith.
(2)
As a matter of practice, when there is a deep similarity and uniformity in the content of two ahadith, it is the habit of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah to interpret one hadith by means of another.
At this point as well, there is much similarity between the hadith of Abu Ayyub and the hadith of Abu Hurairah that comes later; therefore, the second hadith has been considered as an explanation (tafsir) for the aforementioned hadith.
Since in the second hadith it is stated: "Pay the obligatory zakat," therefore, in the aforementioned hadith as well, what is meant is the obligatory zakat.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood that, in order to attain Paradise, fulfilling the rights of Allah (huquq Allah) as well as the rights of the servants (huquq al-‘ibad) is necessary; otherwise, for those who dream of Paradise, Paradise itself will remain nothing but a dream.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that maintaining the ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm) is a means of entering Paradise. The help of Allah, the Exalted, remains with the one who maintains the ties of kinship. Thus, a man came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said:
“O Messenger of Allah! I have some relatives with whom I maintain the ties of kinship, but they try to sever these ties. I treat them well, but they repay me with ill conduct. I bear their excesses with patience, but they behave badly towards me.”
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“If you are truthful in what you say, then it is as if you are putting hot ashes into their mouths. As long as you continue in your conduct, there will remain with you a supporter from Allah, the Exalted.”
(Sahih Muslim, al-Birr wa’s-Silah, Hadith: 6525(2558))

(2)
The required standard of maintaining the ties of kinship in the sight of Allah, the Exalted, is as follows, which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has stated:
“Returning a favor is not maintaining the ties of kinship; rather, maintaining the ties of kinship is that when the relationship is severed by the other, he joins it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adab, Hadith: 5991)

There are three levels in dealing with relatives as follows:
➊ Maintaining the ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm): If relatives cut off relations, he still maintains contact with them.
➋ Reciprocity: If relatives treat him well, he treats them well in return.
➌ Severing the ties of kinship (qat‘ ar-rahm): He cuts off relations with his relatives.
This last level is the worst and most severe degree.
May Allah, the Exalted, protect us from it.
