Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There are three possibilities regarding this sound:
➊ It was the sound of the angels of punishment.
➋ It was the sound of the Jews who were being punished.
➌ It was the sound of the punishment itself.
Accordingly, in a narration of Tabarani, there is clarification: Hazrat Abu Ayyub (radi Allahu anhu) said that I went out with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) after sunset, and I had a vessel of water with me. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went to relieve himself.
When he returned, I assisted him in performing ablution (wudu).
At that time, he said:
"Do you hear any sound as I am hearing?" I replied:
Allah and His Messenger know best.
He said:
"I am hearing the voices of the Jews who are being punished in their graves."
(al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir li’l-Tabarani: 4/120, 121, Hadith: 3857, Dar Ihya al-Turath al-Arabi edition, and Fath al-Bari: 3/306)

(2)
As is his habit, the author has established that in such situations, one should seek refuge with Allah. Also, when the punishment of the grave is established for the Jews, then it will also be for the polytheists, because their disbelief is far more severe than the disbelief of the Jews.

(3)
After this hadith, the author has mentioned another chain of transmission regarding it from Hazrat Nadr, in which there is explicit mention of hearing (tasrih sama‘) from ‘Awn from his father and from his father from Hazrat Bara’ bin ‘Azib (radi Allahu anhu).
Ishaq bin Rahwayh has narrated its text in his chain with these words: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"These are the Jews who are being punished in their graves."
