Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In this hadith, the mention is of the lahd (side niche) but there is no mention of the sanduqi (trench) grave.
It is possible that both martyrs were placed in the lahd.
And it is also possible that one was placed in the lahd and for the other, a space was made in the middle, which is called sanduqi, because preparing space for two people on one side of the grave is a difficult task.
(2)
The mention of the sanduqi grave in the title is to establish the superiority of the lahd, because it is mentioned in the hadith.
In another hadith, it is stated: “Lahd is for us, and shaq (trench) is for others.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Jana'iz, Hadith: 3208)
If by “others” is meant the People of the Book, then we should choose the lahd, and if by this is meant the people of Makkah, then the matter becomes somewhat lighter.
In reality, in Madinah Tayyibah, both the baghli (side niche) and sanduqi (trench) graves were customary. Thus, Abu Talhah al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) was an expert in making lahd, while Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (radi Allahu anhu) used to prepare sanduqi graves.
The people of Makkah, due to the softness of the earth, used to prepare shaq (trench) graves.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave superiority to the lahd over the shaq.
In reality, this depends on the type of soil.
If the soil is soft, then shaq is better, and if the soil is firm, then making a lahd is better.
This is what the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) preferred.
And Allah knows best.
