And Sulaiman bin Kathir narrated that Az-Zuhri narrated to me, from the person who heard from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet said, "Allah has made Mecca a sanctuary (sacred place) and it was a sanctuary before me and will be so after me. It was made legal for me (to fight in it) for a few hours of the day. None is allowed to uproot its thorny shrubs or to cut its trees or to chase its game or to pick up its fallen things except by a person who announces it publicly." On that Al-Abbas said (to the Prophet), "Except Al- Idhkhir for our goldsmiths and for our graves." And so the Prophet added, "Except Al-Idhkhir. " And Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, "Except Al-Idhkhir for our graves and houses." And Ibn `Abbas said, "For their goldsmiths and houses."

Hadith Footnote:
Thus, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permitted the uprooting of the grass called idhkhir.
Explanation:
From this hadith, not only is it established to place idhkhir or any dry grass in the grave,
but also the sanctity of the Haram of Makkah al-Mukarramah is affirmed.
Allah has declared the city of Makkah to be a city of security.
In the Noble Qur’an, it is called “Balad Amin” ().
That is, a city where there is nothing but security; neither is it permissible to kill anyone there, nor is it permissible to kill any animal, to the extent that even uprooting its grass is not allowed.
This is that city of security which Allah has, since the very beginning, declared as “Balad al-Amin.”

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this narration that idhkhir and dry grass can be spread in the grave.
Although the hadith specifically mentions a particular grass, idhkhir, other types of dry grass can be analogically deduced (qiyas) from this.
The specification of idhkhir is because it is abundantly found in the land of Hijaz.
Initially, this grass was used for kindling fire, and it was also used for spreading in houses and graves. Therefore, permission was granted to cut this grass which grows naturally in the sacred land (Haram).
(2)
By "qain" is meant a craftsman.
This includes both goldsmiths and blacksmiths.
(3)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has himself narrated the report of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu with a connected chain.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Knowledge, Hadith: 112)
Similarly, the narration of Safiyyah bint Shaybah is mentioned with a connected chain in Sunan Ibn Majah.
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Manasik, Hadith: 3109)
The narration of Mujahid has also been narrated by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah with his own connected chain.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hunting, Hadith: 1834)
(4)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, by mentioning these narrations, has deduced that Imam Bukhari intended to give preference to the narration of Ikrimah, because the narrations reported by Abu Hurairah and Safiyyah radi Allahu anhuma are also in harmony with it.
