Hadith 1348

(Jabir bin `Abdullah added): Allah's Apostle used to ask about the martyrs of Uhud as to which of them knew more of the Qur'an." And when one of them was pointed out as having more of it he would put him first in the grave and then his companions. (Jabir added): My father and my uncle were shrouded in one sheet.

Hadith Commentary:
The preferred position is precisely what the Imam (rahimahullah) has stated: that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) should not be performed over a martyr (shahid) in the path of Allah.
The details regarding this have already been discussed previously.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that if, out of necessity, two people have to be buried in one grave, then the one who has memorized more of the Qur’an should be placed ahead and first in the lahd (niche), and the other should be placed afterwards and behind him. This is similar to how, in life, during congregational prayer, the one who has memorized more of the Qur’an is made the imam, and the others are his followers (muqtadis).
(Fath al-Bari: 3/271)

(2)
This hadith demonstrates the virtue of the reciter and memorizer (hafiz) of the Noble Qur’an. Along with them, those who are experts in the sciences of the Shari‘ah and possess piety and purity can also be included.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/272)

(3)
It is mentioned in Tabaqat Ibn Sa‘d that the noble father and respected uncle of Jabir radi Allahu anhu were shrouded in two sheets. If this narration is authentic, then it is possible that one sheet was divided into two parts and each part was used as a shroud.

(4)
It should be noted that those who were shrouded in one sheet were also buried together, and in the aforementioned narration, along with the noble father of Jabir radi Allahu anhu, ‘Amr ibn al-Jamuh was shrouded. He was not Jabir’s paternal uncle, but rather his cousin. Out of respect and honor, he called him uncle.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/275)

(5)
Finally, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned another chain of transmission for the aforementioned hadith. The difference between them is that in the first hadith, Layth mentioned ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka‘b as an intermediary between Imam al-Zuhri and Jabir radi Allahu anhu, whereas in the second hadith, Imam al-Awza‘i omitted this intermediary, and the mentioned Sulayman mentioned an unknown intermediary.
And Allah knows best.
