Hadith 1324

Aisha attested Abu Huraira's narration and said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying like that." Ibn `Umar said, "We have lost numerous Qirats."

Hadith Commentary:
It is the habit of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah that when a word appears in the Qur'an, and the same word also appears in a hadith, he provides the explanation of the Qur'anic word alongside it.

Here, the word "faratt" appears in the statement of Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, and it also appears in the Qur'an: ﴿فَرَّطتُ فِي جَنبِ اللَّـهِ﴾ (Az-Zumar: 56), so he explained it as well, meaning: "I have neglected some of Allah's command."

Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu said regarding Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that he narrated many hadiths.

This did not mean that Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu was a liar.

Rather, he had some doubt that perhaps Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu might have forgotten, or that the meaning of the hadith was something else which he did not understand.

When Aisha Siddiqa radi Allahu anha also testified to it, then he became fully convinced, and regretfully said that many of our qirats have been lost until now.

The purpose of the Imam in this chapter is to mention the virtue of the person who accompanies the funeral; he will receive the reward of one qirat.

Qirat refers to a great weight, like the mountain of Uhud, and whoever remains until the burial will receive a reward equal to two qirats.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is stated that whoever remains with the deceased until the burial is completed receives a reward equal to two qirats, and these two qirats are like two great mountains. (Hadith: 1325) The qirat of this world is one-twelfth of a dirham, but the qirat of the Hereafter, the reward for which has been promised in these ahadith, is equal to a mountain.

(2)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, in relation to the word "tafrīt" (negligence), has alluded to a Qur'anic verse. Allah, the Exalted, says:
﴿يَا حَسْرَتَىٰ عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطتُ فِي جَنبِ اللَّـهِ﴾ "Alas for me! How greatly I have neglected (tafrīt) my duty to Allah." (Surah Az-Zumar: 56)
