Hadith 1316

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "When a funeral is ready and the men carry the deceased on their necks (shoulders), if it was pious then it will say, 'Present me quickly', and if it was not pious, then it will say, 'Woe to it (me), where are they taking it (me)?' And its voice is heard by everything except mankind and if he heard it he would fall unconscious."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established another chapter heading for the mentioned hadith in the following words:
(Kalam al-mayyit ‘ala al-janazah)
“The speech of the deceased on the bier.” This is not repetition, because from this hadith, the ruling of hastening with the bier is established.
It is as if this is a completion and supplement to the previous heading, and it is of the category of a chapter within a chapter.
What is meant by this is that as soon as the bier is lifted, its presentation (before Allah) begins.

(2)
It should be clear that at the time the bier is lifted, Allah, the Exalted, grants the deceased a barzakh (intermediate realm) tongue.
If he is among the people of Paradise, then out of longing for Paradise he says: “Take me quickly, take me quickly, so that I may attain my desire.” And if he is among the people of Hellfire, then out of fear he says: “Where are you taking me?” At that time, Allah, the Exalted, grants him the ability to speak in such a manner that all creatures except jinn and humans hear his voice.

(3)
Some individuals have derived from this hadith the issue of the “hearing of the dead” (sama‘ al-mawta), which is completely baseless.
We will clarify this in Hadith: 3976.

(4)
(“When the bier is placed”)
has two meanings:
One is that when the deceased is prepared and placed upon the bier; the second is when the deceased is lifted upon the shoulders.
The first meaning is clearer, and it is supported by this hadith in which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“When the righteous person is placed upon the bier, he says: ‘Take me quickly, take me quickly.’”
