Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Allah's Apostle said, When the funeral is ready and the men carry it on their shoulders, if the deceased was righteous it will say, 'Present me (hurriedly),' and if he was not righteous, it will say, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are they taking it (me)?' Its voice is heard by everything except man and if he heard it he would fall unconscious."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
There is consensus among all scholars that only men should carry the funeral bier, because women are naturally weaker and more delicate.
In addition, if women were to carry the funeral bier, there would be a risk of intermingling between men and women, which could lead to temptation and corruption. Therefore, women are not permitted to carry the funeral bier.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/233)
Furthermore, it is narrated from Umm ‘Atiyyah (radi Allahu anha) that we were prohibited from accompanying the funeral procession, but this prohibition was not enforced strictly upon us.
(Hadith: 1278)
This hadith also implies that women cannot carry the funeral bier, and moreover, there is no example from the earliest generations (Qurūn Ula) of any woman having carried a funeral bier.
And Allah knows best.
