Narrated Sa`id Al-Maqburi: That his father said, "While we were accompanying a funeral procession, Abu Huraira got hold of the hand of Marwan and they sat down before the coffin was put down. Then Abu Sa`id came and took hold of Marwan's hand and said, "Get up. By Allah, no doubt this (i.e. Abu Huraira) knows that the Prophet forbade us to do that." Abu Huraira said, "He (Abu Sa`id) has spoken the truth."

Hadith Commentary:
Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) had forgotten this hadith.
When Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) reminded him, he remembered it and affirmed it.
Most of the Companions and Followers (Tabi'in) consider this (practice) to be recommended (mustahabb), while al-Sha'bi and al-Nakha'i said that sitting down before the funeral (janazah) is placed on the ground is disliked (makruh), and some have said that remaining standing is obligatory (fard).
Al-Nasa'i narrated from Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'id (radi Allahu anhuma) that: "We did not see the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sitting during any funeral until the funeral was placed on the ground."

Hadith Commentary:
The fact that Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) sat down with Marwan is evidence that, according to Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu), standing for the funeral (janazah) was not obligatory.
This is clarified by a narration. Imam Hakim has stated that Marwan said to Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu), “Why did you not inform me about this standing?” Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) replied, “You were the imam; when you sat down, I also sat down.”
(al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim: 1/356)
The clear meaning of this is that Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) did not consider this ruling to be obligatory, and Marwan had no knowledge of this issue at all. Upon being informed by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu), he immediately acted and stood up.
In any case, this standing was practiced earlier, but later this action was abandoned.
And Allah knows best.
