Hadith 1285

Narrated Anas bin Malik: We were (in the funeral procession) of one of the daughters of the Prophet and he was sitting by the side of the grave. I saw his eyes shedding tears. He said, "Is there anyone among you who did not have sexual relations with his wife last night?" Abu Talha replied in the affirmative. And so the Prophet told him to get down in the grave. And so he got down in her grave.

Hadith Commentary: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not have ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) descend. By doing so, he intended to admonish him. It is said that on the night in which Umm Kulthum (radi Allahu anha) passed away, ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) had intercourse with a slave woman. This act of his was not liked by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) (Wahidi). Before Umm Kulthum (radi Allahu anha), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Ruqayyah (radi Allahu anha), was in the marriage of ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu). Upon her passing, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) married Umm Kulthum (radi Allahu anha) to him, and upon her passing, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that if he had a third daughter, he would have married her to ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) as well. From this, the esteem that ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) held in the heart of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) becomes evident.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The purpose is that crying upon someone's death or when a calamity befalls is a natural matter. There will be no accountability for this. However, at such a time, slapping the cheeks, beating the body, tearing the clothes, or uttering words of ingratitude with the tongue are prohibited. This daughter was Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, who passed away in the ninth year of Hijrah. This does not refer to Sayyidah Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha, because at the time of her death, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was present at the battlefield of Badr.

(2)
Sayyidah Umm Kulthum remained ill for a long period, and Uthman radi Allahu anhu did not even suspect that she would pass away that night, which is why he had intercourse with his slave woman that night. However, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not like that he, not considering his sick wife who was near death, became preoccupied with his slave woman. Therefore, as a form of reproach, he indicated to him with a gesture not to descend into the grave. There is no hadith that proves that he had intercourse after the passing of Sayyidah Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, or at the time of her death, or that he was aware of his daughter's passing. The Rafidi sect spreads false propaganda that Uthman radi Allahu anhu had intercourse with Sayyidah Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha after her death, or that her death occurred because of intercourse with him. There is not even an indication of this in the hadith.

Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah, in one narration, has clarified from Ibn al-Mubarak that its meaning is of committing a sin, i.e., the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Who among you has not committed a sinful act tonight?" (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jana'iz: Hadith: 1342). But Imam Ibn Hazm rahimahullah has refuted this. Ma'adhallah! How could Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu, in the presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, make such a claim that no sin was committed by him that night? Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that the meaning we have stated is also supported by the narration in which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "No one should descend into the grave who has had intercourse with his family last night," so Uthman radi Allahu anhu stepped aside.
