Hadith 1275

Narrated Ibrahim: Once a meal was brought to `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf and he was fasting. He said, "Mustab bin `Umar was martyred and he was better than I and was shrouded in his Burd and when his head was covered with it, his legs became bare, and when his legs were covered his head got uncovered. Hamza was martyred and was better than I. Now the worldly wealth have been bestowed upon us (or said a similar thing). No doubt, I fear that the rewards of my deeds might have been given earlier in this world." Then he started weeping and left his food.

Hadith Commentary:
Hazrat Mus'ab (radi Allahu anhu) possessed only a single sheet, which was his entire property; even that was narrow, and it was given as his shroud.

The correspondence between the chapter and the hadith is evident.

Although Hazrat Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu) was fasting and had been hungry all day, even then, immersed in these thoughts, he refrained from eating.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (radi Allahu anhu) was among the ‘Asharah Mubasharah (the ten given glad tidings of Paradise) and was so wealthy that he was given the title "Chief of the Merchants."

At the time of his passing, heaps of wealth were inherited by his heirs.

Even in such circumstances, he was always present and ready to serve the Muslims in every possible way.

Once, several hundred of his camels, laden with grain, arrived from the land of Sham (Greater Syria).

He distributed all that grain free of charge among the people of Madinah.

Radi Allahu anhu wa ardah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent is that the arrangement and management of the shroud (kafan) should be made from the deceased’s own estate, even if the entirety of the estate is only sufficient to provide for the shroud.
If there is only a single sheet in the estate, even then the need can be fulfilled, as is evident from the aforementioned narration that in the estate of Hazrat Mus’ab bin Umair radi Allahu anhu, nothing was found except a single sheet with which he could be shrouded.
Regarding Hazrat Hamzah radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned in the previous hadith that only a single sheet was available in his estate as well, and even that sheet was not sufficient to cover the entire body; if the head was covered, his feet would be exposed, and if the feet were covered, the head would be exposed.
From this, it is also understood that it is not necessary to cover the entire body of the deceased, because if it had been necessary, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would have taken cloth from other companions to cover their feet, but he did not do so.
(2)
From this hadith, the indifference of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum towards the world, their piety, and their abstinence is evident, in that when Hazrat Mus’ab bin Umair and Hazrat Hamzah radi Allahu anhum were martyred, they left behind nothing as inheritance except a single sheet for their bodies, and even that could not cover the entire body.
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu was fasting, and when various foods were presented to him at the time of breaking the fast, the image of his companions’ lives came before him, and he wept so much that he could not eat, and he got up and left without partaking of the food.
There is a lesson in this for those who display extravagance in their iftars or iftar parties.
We should adopt moderation in every matter.
And Allah knows best.
