Hadith Commentary:
Some individuals hold the view that the hair of a deceased woman should be left as it is, and there is no need to braid it, because this is an adornment and the deceased has no need for it. Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha herself made three braids for her (the deceased). This is her own action; it does not have the tacit approval (taqrir) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. However, this position has no basis, because Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha did not do anything without the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Thus, Sa‘id ibn Mansur has narrated this report in the following words: Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha states that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded:
“Give her an odd number of ritual baths (ghusl) and make braids in her hair.”
Imam Ibn Hibban rahimahullah states in his Sahih that Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded them:
“Give her a ritual bath (ghusl) three times, or five times, or seven times, and make three braids in her hair.”
(Sahih Ibn Hibban (al-Ihsan): 15/5, Hadith: 3022, and Fath al-Bari: 3/172)
On this basis, braiding the hair of a deceased woman and making plaits is not only permissible but recommended (mustahabb).
And Allah knows best.
