Hadith 1255

Ayyub said that Hafsah also narrated to me like the hadith of Muhammad bin Sirin. In Hafsah’s narration, it was mentioned to wash an odd number of times, and there was this detail: three, five, or seven times (to wash), and it was also stated to begin washing the body from the right side and from the limbs of ablution. It was also in this narration that Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We combed her hair and divided it into three braids.
Narrated Um 'Atiyya: Allah's Apostle , concerning his (dead) daughter's bath, said, "Start with the right side, and the parts which are washed in ablution."

Hadith Commentary:
It is mentioned in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would begin every good deed with the right hand, and he preferred the right side.

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has kept the chapter heading general so that other types of ritual baths (ghusl) can be analogized to the main ritual bath.

The hadith mentions the right sides and the parts of ablution (wudu).

There is no contradiction between these two, because sometimes the right sides and the parts of ablution can be washed simultaneously; then, for those limbs which are not washed during ablution, their right side should be washed during the ritual bath.

In reality, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) intends to refute Abu Qilabah, whose position is that when giving the ritual bath to the deceased, one should begin first with the head and then with the beard.
