Hadith 1247

And Abu Rafi’ narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Why did you not inform me?
Narrated Ibn `Abbas.: A person died and Allah's Apostle used to visit him. He died at night and (the people) buried him at night. In the morning they informed the Prophet (about his death). He said, "What prevented you from informing me?" They replied, "It was night and it was a dark night and so we disliked to trouble you." The Prophet went to his grave and offered the (funeral) prayer.

Hadith Commentary:
This hadith establishes that everyone should be informed about the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) of the deceased, and even now, on such occasions, the funeral prayer can be performed at the grave as well.

Hadith Commentary:
Previously, in the heading, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah discussed informing others about someone’s death, and in this heading, he has discussed giving news about the preparation of the funeral, especially informing those who are prominent personalities and leaders or guides.

Some commentators have said that the person mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is the same as the one mentioned in the hadith of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. However, this is not correct, because in the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, there is mention of a woman named Umm Mihjan radi Allahu anha who used to clean the mosque, whereas the person about whom Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is giving news—that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to his grave and performed the funeral prayer—was not a woman but a man. Therefore, in no way can these two be the same person.

These are two separate incidents: in one, there is mention of performing the funeral prayer at the grave of a woman, and in the other, performing the funeral prayer at the grave of a man.
