Hadith 1237

And it was said to Wahb bin Munabbih, may Allah have mercy on him, "Is not «لا إله إلا الله» the key to Paradise?" So he replied, "Certainly, but there is no key except that it has ridges (teeth). Therefore, if you bring a key with ridges, the lock will open; otherwise, it will not open."
Narrated Abu Dhar: Allah's Apostle said, "Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the news (or good tidings) that if any of my followers dies worshipping none (in any way) along with Allah, he will enter Paradise." I asked, "Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft?" He replied, "Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft."

Understanding of the Hadith:
These ahadith contain the evidence that those who commit major sins (kabirah) are not eternally destined for Hell; rather, even if they enter Hell, after receiving punishment for their sins, they will ultimately enter Paradise.

Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Rashid said: It is possible that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah intended by this that whoever recites this word of Tawhid (the declaration of Allah’s oneness) at the time of death with sincerity, his past sins will be dropped and forgiven. And sincerity (ikhlas) entails obligatory repentance and remorse, and the recitation of this word is a sign for him. And he brought the hadith of Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu so that it becomes clear that merely reciting the word is not sufficient, but belief and action are necessary.

For this reason, at the end of the hadith of Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu in the Book of Clothing (Kitab al-Libas), Abu Abdullah Imam Bukhari says that this hadith is for the time of death, or before that when one repents and feels remorse.

The narration of Wahib has been transmitted by the author (Imam Bukhari) in his Tarikh with a connected chain, and Abu Nu‘aym has narrated it in Hilyah (Fath al-Bari).
