Hadith 1201

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d: The Prophet went out to affect a reconciliation between the tribes of Bani `Amr bin `Auf and the time of the prayer became due; Bilal went to Abu Bakr and said, "The Prophet is detained. Will you lead the people in the prayer?" Abu Bakr replied, "Yes, if you wish." So Bilal pronounced the Iqama and Abu Bakr led the prayer. In the meantime the Prophet came crossing the rows (of the praying people) till he stood in the first row and the people started clapping. Abu Bakr never looked hither and thither during the prayer but when the people clapped too much, he looked back and saw the Prophet in the (first) row. The Prophet waved him to remain at his place, but Abu Bakr raised both his hands and sent praises to Allah and then retreated and the Prophet went forward and led the prayer. Hadith Commentary:
The correspondence of this narration with the chapter heading’s translation is difficult, because there is no mention of saying "Subhan Allah" in it. Perhaps Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has alluded to another chain of this hadith, which has already been mentioned above, and in that version it is clearly stated: "You clapped a lot; if something happens in the prayer, say 'Subhan Allah.' Clapping is for women."
As for saying "Alhamdulillah," that is derived from the action of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, who, during the prayer, raised both hands and thanked Allah. Some have said that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah made an analogy (qiyas) between tasbih (saying "Subhan Allah") and tahmid (saying "Alhamdulillah"), so this narration also becomes in accordance with the chapter heading (Wahidi).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In case of the fear that the initial time for prayer will pass and the absence of the imam, a person of knowledge and virtue from among the congregation may lead the prayer, as is evident from the action of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu in this hadith.

(2)
From the statement, “Abu Bakr did not look here and there at all during the prayer,” it is also clear that prayer should be performed with complete attention and presence of heart.

(3)
In this narration, only the saying of “alhamdulillah” during the prayer is mentioned. Although “subhan Allah” is not mentioned in this narration, Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah himself has explained this narration in detail at another place, with the following words:
When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam finished the prayer, he turned to the people and said:
“O people! What is the matter with you that when something happens to you during the prayer, you begin to clap? This action is only for women. Therefore, whoever among you encounters something during the prayer, let him say ‘subhan Allah.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-‘Amal fi as-Salat, Hadith: 1218)
From this narration, the permissibility of saying “subhan Allah” during the prayer is understood.
Doing so does not invalidate the prayer, even if the purpose of saying “subhan Allah” is to draw the attention of others.

(4)
This narration also shows that in such situations, women should clap, as Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah himself will establish a separate chapter regarding this.
