Hadith 1173

My sister Hafsa told me that the Prophet used to offer two light rak`at after dawn and it was the time when I never went to the Prophet."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said this because, before Fajr, after the ‘Isha prayer, and at midday, even the people of the household engaged in chores should seek permission before entering; at such times, how could outsiders meet with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)?
Therefore, Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) learned about the state of these Sunnahs by hearing from his sister, Umm al-Mu’minin Hafsah (radi Allahu anha).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) performed the aforementioned Sunnah prayers alone.
By "togetherness" (ma‘iyyat), only conformity in quantity is meant.
It does not mean that he performed them following the leadership (iqtida) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Furthermore, since the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would be occupied in conversation with people during the daytime, he would perform the Sunnah prayers in the mosque after the obligatory (fard) prayers during the day. However, at night he would be at home and would perform the Sunnah prayers at home.
After leading the Friday (Jumu‘ah) prayer, he would quickly return home and take a midday rest (qaylulah), so he would also perform the Sunnah prayers after Jumu‘ah at home. In contrast, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until it was cooler and then perform the Sunnah prayers in the mosque after it.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/66)
In one narration of Sahih Muslim, there is mention of performing four Sunnah prayers before Zuhr.
(Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Hadith: 1888(730))
Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) did not see the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performing the Sunnah of Fajr; he narrated it on the authority of his sister Hafsah (radi Allahu anha) and excused himself by saying that at that time he could not be present with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), because at that time he would cut himself off from creation and turn towards Allah.
And Allah knows best.

At the end, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has mentioned the corroboration (mutaba‘ah) of Kathir ibn Farqad, which has not reached us with a connected chain. However, the corroboration of Ayyub has been narrated by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) himself with his own connected chain.
