Narrated Salama: I heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever (intentionally) ascribes to me what I have not said then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire."
Explanation & Benefits

Explanation:
This is the first thulathiyyat (three-link) hadith of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah. Thulathiyyat are those hadiths in which there are only three narrators between the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah. Such hadiths are called the thulathiyyat of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah. And in al-Jami‘ al-Sahih, their number is only twenty-two. This virtue was not attained by other contemporary scholars of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah, such as Imam Muslim and others. The author of Anwar al-Bari, while mentioning here the thulathiyyat of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah, has tried to establish the superiority of Imam Abu Hanifah over Imam al-Bukhari by referencing the book Musnad Imam A‘zam for the thanaiyyat (two-link chains) of Imam Abu Hanifah. However, the fact is that there is no book written by Imam Abu Hanifah in the science of hadith present in the world, and the book called Musnad Imam A‘zam is a compilation by Muhammad Khwarizmi, which became prevalent in 674 AH [بستان المحدثین،ص: 5]

Hadith Commentary:
➊
From this hadith, it is understood that those statements which are falsely attributed to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), whether they pertain to encouragement and warning or to rulings and legal matters, narrating them is a precursor to entering Hellfire. Therefore, whether the narrations are verbal or practical, the narrator must exercise utmost caution.
Especially, narrating fabricated and self-invented narrations is not permissible under any circumstance; they may only be quoted to clarify that they are baseless and unfounded.
Similarly, presenting weak (da‘if) narrations in such a manner that listeners might consider them authentic and deem it necessary to act upon them—this approach is also incorrect.
➋
This hadith of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah is the first thulathi (three-chain) hadith.
A thulathi hadith is one in which there are only three intermediaries between the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the Imam or hadith scholar.
Those narrations in Sahih Bukhari in which there are three narrators between the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and Imam Bukhari rahimahullah are called the Thulathiyat of Bukhari.
Their number in Sahih Bukhari is twenty-three.
This virtue was not attained by any contemporary of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah.
Some people mention the Thunayyat (two-chain narrations) of Abu Hanifah.
However, in the science of hadith, there is no book of Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah present in the world.
