Narrated Anas: Whenever a strong wind blew, anxiety appeared on the face of the Prophet (fearing that wind might be a sign of Allah's wrath).

Hadith Commentary:
Since rain often follows a windstorm, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith here in that context. The people of ‘Ad were punished with a windstorm. Therefore, when a windstorm would come, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would become anxious, contemplating the punishment of Allah.

In the narration of Muslim, it is mentioned that when a windstorm would blow, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would supplicate with these words:
«اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا، وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا، وَشَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ» meaning, “O Allah, I ask You for the good of this wind and the good that is within it and the good that it has been sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil that is within it and the evil that it has been sent with.”

In another narration, it is mentioned that when he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would see a windstorm, he would sit down on his knees and supplicate:
Allahumma aj‘alha riyahan wa la taj‘alha rihan.
Meaning: “O Allah, make it a beneficial wind and do not make it a wind of punishment.”

The word “riyaah” is used for a wind of mercy, and “reeh” is used for a wind of punishment, as has been mentioned in several verses of the Noble Qur’an.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Rain often follows a windstorm; for this reason, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith here.
A punishment descended upon the people of ‘Ad in the form of a windstorm, so at the time of a windstorm, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would become apprehensive, contemplating the possibility of Allah’s punishment, and would fall to his knees.
As is mentioned in the hadith, when a strong wind would blow, he would supplicate as follows:
“O Allah! I ask You for the good of this wind and the good that is within it, and the good that it has been sent with.
O Allah! I seek refuge with You from its evil, and the evil that is within it, and the evil that it has been sent with.”
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salat, Hadith: 2084(899))

(2)
In the Noble Qur’an, the word “riyaah” is used for a wind of mercy, and the word “reeh” is used for a wind of punishment.
