Obligation to obey leaders, except in sin
Hadith 1040
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَنِي يَعْلَى بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ سورة النساء آية 59 نزلت فِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ السَّهْمِيِّ ، إِذْ بَعَثَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.” ( an-Nisa: 59) (O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.) This verse was revealed regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah bin Qais bin ‘Adi Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed him as the commander of an army and sent him forth.
Hadith 1041
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْوَرَّاقُ ، قَالَ : ثنا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " السَّمْعُ وَالطَّاعَةُ عَلَى الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ إِلا أَنْ يُؤْمَرَ بِمَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِذَا أُمِرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَلا سَمْعَ وَلا طَاعَةَ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Obedience and listening (to the leader) is obligatory upon every Muslim as long as he is not ordered to disobey Allah Almighty; when he is ordered to commit a sin, then there is no listening or obedience.
