What is reported about slaughtered animals
Hadith 895
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أنا الثَّوْرِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبَايَةَ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ مِنْ تِهَامَةَ ، فَأَصَابَ الْقَوْمُ غَنَمًا وَإِبِلا ، فَعَجَّلُوا بِهَا ، فَأَغْلَوْا بِهَا الْقُدُورَ ، فَانْتَهَى إِلَيْهِمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَ بِالْقُدُورِ فَأُكْفِئَتْ ، وَعَدَلَ عَشْرًا مِنَ الْغَنَمِ بِجَزُورٍ ، قَالَ : وَنَدَّ مِنْهَا بَعِيرٌ ، فَرَمَاهُ الرَّجُلُ بِسَهْمٍ فَحَبَسَهُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ لِهَذِهِ الْبَهَائِمِ أَوَابِدَ كَأَوَابِدِ الْوَحْشِ ، فَمَا غَلَبَكُمْ مِنْهَا فَاصْنَعُوا بِهَا هَكَذَا " . قَالَ : قَالَ : ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَافِعَ بْنَ خَدِيجٍ أَتَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّا نَخَافُ ، أَوْ إِنَّا نَرْجُوا أَنْ نَلْقَى الْعَدُوَّ غَدًا وَلَيْسَ مَعَنَا مُدًى ، أَفَنَذْبَحُ بِالْقَصَبِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا أَنْهَرَ الدَّمَ ، وَذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ، فَكُلُوا لَيْسَ السِّنَّ وَالظُّفُرَ ، وَسَأُحَدِّثُكُمْ ، فَأَمَّا السِّنُّ فَعَظْمٌ ، وَأَمَّا الظُّفُرُ فَمُدَى الْحَبَشَةِ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنَّ نَاضِحًا تَرَدَّى فِي بِئْرٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَذُكِّيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ شَاكِلَتِهِ يَعْنِي خَاصِرَتَهُ " فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَشِيرًا بِدِرْهَمَيْنِ .
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were staying with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the lower part of Dhul-Hulaifah. The people obtained camels and goats (as spoils of war) and, acting hastily, began to cook them in pots before they were distributed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them and ordered the pots to be overturned. He considered ten goats equal to one camel. The narrator says: One of the camels ran away, so a man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These animals also become wild like wild animals; if any of them overpowers you, then treat it in this way. Then Rafi’ bin Khadij came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We fear, or we hope, that tomorrow (i.e., in the near future) we will face the enemy. We do not have knives; can we slaughter with a sharp-edged bamboo? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever causes blood to flow, except for teeth and nails, and Allah’s name is mentioned upon the slaughtered animal, then eat it. I will tell you the reason: the tooth is a bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians. Then he (Rafi’) said: A camel fell into a well in Madinah, so it was slaughtered from its back. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) bought a tenth part of it for two dirhams.
Hadith 896
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ ، قَالَ : ثنا حَبَّانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ هِلالٍ ، قَالَ : ثنا جَرِيرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ أَيُّوبُ يُحَدِّثُنِي ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، فَلَقِيتُ زَيْدًا فَسَأَلْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ ثني عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ " كَانَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ نَاقَةٌ تَرْعَى فِي قِبَلِ أُحُدٍ ، فَعَرَضَ لَهَا فَنَحَرَهَا بِوَتَدٍ ، فَقُلْتُ لِزَيْدٍ : مِنْ حَدِيدٍ أَوْ مِنْ خَشَبٍ ؟ قَالَ : لا ، بَلْ مِنْ خَشَبٍ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْهَا ، فَأَمَرَهُ بِأَكْلِهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that an Ansari man had a she-camel which used to graze towards (the mountain of) Uhud. He came before it and slaughtered it with a peg (i.e., he thrust the peg into its neck). I asked Zaid: Was the peg made of iron or wood? He said: It was made of wood. Then that man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about it, so he (the Prophet) instructed him to eat from it.
Hadith 897
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، قَالَ : أنا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ نَافِعِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ تَرْعَى لِكَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ غَنَمًا لَهُمْ بِسَلْعٍ ، فَخَافَتْ عَلَى شَاةٍ أَنْ تَمُوتَ ، فَأَخَذَتْ حَجَرًا فَذَبَحَتْهَا بِهِ ، وَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ ذُكِرَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِأَكْلِهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a woman used to graze the goats of Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik on (the mountain of) Sala'. She feared that one of the goats would die, so she took a stone and slaughtered the goat with it. This matter was mentioned before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he ordered them to eat (that goat).
Hadith 898
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، قَالَ : ثنا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تُصْبَرَ الْبَهَائِمُ " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tying up animals and then killing them.
Hadith 899
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : ثنا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلابَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَشْعَثِ الصَّنْعَانِيِّ ، عَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ الإِحْسَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ ، فَأَحْسِنُوا الْقِتْلَةَ ، وَأَحْسِنُوا الذِّبْحَةَ ، وَلْيُحِدَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَفْرَتَهُ ، وَلْيُرِحْ ذَبِيحَتَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has made excellence obligatory in all matters, so kill in the best manner and slaughter in the best manner. You should sharpen your knife and give comfort to your sacrificial animal.
Hadith 900
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ، قَالَ : ثنا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْوَدَّاكِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْجَنِينِ ، فَقَالَ : " كُلُوهُ إِنْ شِئْتُمْ ، فَإِنَّ ذَكَاتَهُ ذَكَاةُ أُمِّهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the fetus (the unborn offspring in the womb), so he said: If you wish, you may eat it, because it becomes slaughtered due to its mother being slaughtered. (The slaughtering of its mother is sufficient for it.)
Hadith 901
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، قَالَ : أنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ ، قَالَ : ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعُشَرَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَمَا يَكُونُ الذَّكَاةُ إِلا فِي الْحَلْقِ وَاللَّبَّةِ ؟ فَقَالَ : " لَوْ طَعَنْتَ فِي فَخِذِهَا لأَجْزَأَ عَنْكَ " ، قَالَ ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ : هَذَا فِي مَا لا يُقْدَرُ عَلَيْهِ ، يشبه التَّرَدِّيَ .
Abu Ash'ara narrates from his father that I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is it permissible to slaughter (an animal) from the pit of the neck or the throat? He replied: If you strike its thigh with a spear (or something similar), that is also sufficient. Ibn Mahdi says: This ruling is for an animal that is uncontrollable, such as one that falls from a height, etc.
