Nafi' reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) performed the funeral prayer for nine (9) deceased together; the men were placed towards the imam and the women towards the qiblah, and he arranged the rows of the people. (Similarly) the funeral of the wife of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyida Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), and her son Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) was held, and rows were formed for both together. On that day, the duties of leading the prayer were performed by Sayyiduna Sa'id bin As (may Allah be pleased with him). Among those who performed the funeral prayer were Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id, and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them). The child was placed towards the imam. A man (Ammar, the freed slave of Harith) says: Considering this incorrect, I looked towards Abdullah bin Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Sa'id, and Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: "What is this?" So they replied: "This is the Sunnah."

Zaid bin Talha Taimi says that I heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he recited Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the funeral prayer and recited aloud. Then he said: "I recited aloud to let you know that this is also Sunnah, and the Imam can also recite silently."

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the funeral prayer of a deceased person, and I memorized one of his supplications. He was supplicating: "O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him, protect him from punishment, pardon him, honor his hospitality, and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of sins as You cleanse a white garment of dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a companion better than his companion. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave." Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I wished that I were that deceased person!"

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I was present when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by a grave in which a deceased had been buried that very night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired: "Whose grave is this?" The companions replied: "This is the grave of such-and-such a man who passed away last night. We did not wish to trouble you at night, lest it be difficult for you or cause you discomfort, so we buried him." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up, we formed rows behind him, and he performed the funeral prayer for him.

So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade and reproached burying at night until the funeral prayer had been performed over him (meaning that more people can participate in the funeral during the day), except if a person is compelled to do so. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "When any of you gives a shroud to his brother, he should give the best shroud."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a red sheet was placed in the blessed grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Breaking the bone of a deceased believer is just as (sinful) as breaking the bone of a living person (is sinful)."

Hadith Takhrijاز غلام مصطفےٰ ظهير امن پوري:«إسناده حسن له شواهد: مسند الإمام أحمد: 58/6، سنن أبي داود: 3207، سنن ابن ماجہ: 1616، اس حدیث کو امام ابن حبان رحمہ اللہ (3167) نے صحیح کہا ہے، حافظ نووی رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں: ”رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ بِإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ إِلَّا رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا وَهُوَ سَعْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ أَخُو يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ فَضَعَّفَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ وَوَثَّقَهُ الْأَكْثَرُونَ وَرَوَى لَهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي صَحِيحِهِ وَهُوَ كَافٍ فِي الِاحْتِجَاجِ بِهِ وَلَمْ يُضَعِّفْهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ“ (المجموع شرح المهذب: 300/5)۔ حافظ ابن القطان فاسی رحمہ اللہ (بيان الوهم والإيهام: 212/4) نے حسن کہا ہے۔»
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wrap two men from among the martyrs of Uhud in a single shroud, then he would ask: "Which of them had memorized more of the Qur'an?" When one of them was pointed out, he would lower him into the grave first. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, I will be a witness over these people." He ordered that they be buried with their blood, did not offer their funeral prayer, nor did he bathe them.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Any Muslim whose three children die (and he remains patient), he will enter the Fire only to fulfill an oath."

He said: “Wash her three or five times, or more if you feel it necessary, with water and lotus leaves. In the last time, add camphor or something of camphor. When you finish, inform me.” When we finished and informed him, he gave us his lower garment and said: “Wrap it around her body.”

Some of us passed away in such a state that they did not receive any portion of their reward (in this world). Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) was among them, who was martyred in the Battle of Uhud. Nothing was found to shroud him except a striped sheet. If we covered his head with it, his feet would remain uncovered, and if we covered his feet, his head would remain uncovered. (Seeing this situation) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Cover his head with the sheet and put idhkhir grass on his feet.” Some of us are such whose fruit has ripened and they are harvesting it.

Hadith Takhrijاز غلام مصطفےٰ ظهير امن پوري:«إسناده ضعيف لانقطاعه والحديث صحيح: ابو قلابہ نے سیدنا سمرہ بن جندب رضی اللہ عنہ سے سماع نہیں کیا، المستدرک للحاکم (185/4) میں ابو مطلب کا واسطہ ذکر ہے، جس کی بنیاد پر یہ سند حسن ہے، امام حاکم رحمہ اللہ نے اس کی سند کو امام بخاری رحمہ اللہ اور امام مسلم رحمہ اللہ کی شرط پر صحیح کہا ہے۔ حافظ ابن حجر رحمہ اللہ (فتح الباري: 3/135) نے بھی اس کی سند کو صحیح قرار دیا ہے۔ حافظ ابن کثیر رحمہ اللہ (تفسير ابن کثیر: 406/3، ت: سلامتہ) نے اس کی سند کو "جید" کہا ہے۔ اس حدیث کو امام ترمذی رحمہ اللہ (2810) نے حسن صحیح کہا ہے۔ اس حدیث کا بسند حسن شاہد سنن ابی داؤد (4061، 3878) سنن ترمذی (994) اور سنن ابن ماجہ (3566) میں بھی آتا ہے، اسے امام ترمذی رحمہ اللہ نے حسن صحیح اور امام ابن حبان رحمہ اللہ (5423) اور حافظ ابن القطان فاسی رحمہ اللہ (بيان الوهم والإيهام: 180/2) نے صحيح الإسناد اور حافظ ذہبی رحمہ اللہ نے صحیح کہا ہے۔ حافظ ابن کثیر رحمہ اللہ فرماتے ہیں: ”هَذَا حَدِيثٌ جَيِّدُ الْإِسْنَادِ، رِجَالُهُ عَلَى شَرْطِ مُسْلِمٍ“ (تفسير ابن كثير: 406/3، ت: سلامة)۔»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: «اپنے مرنے والوں کو لا إله إلا اللہ کی تلقین کرو۔»

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever offers the funeral prayer for a deceased person will receive one qirat (reward), and whoever accompanies it until the burial will receive two qirats (reward). One qirat or the smaller qirat is equal to the mountain of Uhud.” The words of Ibn Maqri are: “Whoever remained with it until the burial was completed.”

Hadith Takhrijاز غلام مصطفےٰ ظهير امن پوري:«إسناده صحيح: مسند علي ابن الجعد: 95، شرح معاني الآثار للطحاوي: 495/1، السنن الكبرى للبيهقي: 37/4، جمہور ائمہ کے نزدیک امام سعید بن مسیب رحمہ اللہ کا سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے سماع ثابت ہے۔ (المستدرک للحاکم: 126/1)»
Ibn Abi Layla says that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say four takbirs over our funerals. On one funeral, he said five takbirs. When people asked him about it, he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to say five takbirs," or he said: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said five takbirs."
