Nafi' reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) performed the funeral prayer for nine (9) deceased together; the men were placed towards the imam and the women towards the qiblah, and he arranged the rows of the people. (Similarly) the funeral of the wife of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyida Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), and her son Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) was held, and rows were formed for both together. On that day, the duties of leading the prayer were performed by Sayyiduna Sa'id bin As (may Allah be pleased with him). Among those who performed the funeral prayer were Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id, and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them). The child was placed towards the imam. A man (Ammar, the freed slave of Harith) says: Considering this incorrect, I looked towards Abdullah bin Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Abu Sa'id, and Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: "What is this?" So they replied: "This is the Sunnah."
Hadith 535
This narration is also mentioned through another chain.
Hadith 536
Zaid bin Talha Taimi says that I heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he recited Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the funeral prayer and recited aloud. Then he said: "I recited aloud to let you know that this is also Sunnah, and the Imam can also recite silently."
Hadith 537
Talha bin Abdullah bin Awf, the nephew of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), says: I offered the funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). In it, he recited Surah Al-Fatihah along with another Surah, and he recited aloud. When he finished with salam, I held his hand and asked him the reason for this. He replied: "This is the Sunnah and the truth." This narration is also mentioned with the chain of Muhammad bin Yahya.

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the funeral prayer of a deceased person, and I memorized one of his supplications. He was supplicating: "O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him, protect him from punishment, pardon him, honor his hospitality, and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of sins as You cleanse a white garment of dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a companion better than his companion. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave." Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I wished that I were that deceased person!"

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Sunnah in the funeral prayer is that a person says the takbeer, then recites Surah Al-Fatihah, then sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then sincerely supplicates for the deceased, does not recite (anything) after the first takbeer, then in his heart turns (salam) to his right side.
Hadith 541
Abu Ibrahim narrates from his father that he attended a funeral prayer with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this supplication: "O Allah! Forgive our living and our deceased, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I was present when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by a grave in which a deceased had been buried that very night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired: "Whose grave is this?" The companions replied: "This is the grave of such-and-such a man who passed away last night. We did not wish to trouble you at night, lest it be difficult for you or cause you discomfort, so we buried him." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up, we formed rows behind him, and he performed the funeral prayer for him.
Hadith 543
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed the people of the death of Najashi on the day of his passing, then took them to the place of prayer for the funeral, arranged their rows, and said four takbirs over him.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned one of his companions in a sermon one day, who had passed away, and he was buried at night in a small shroud. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade and reproached burying at night until the funeral prayer had been performed over him (meaning that more people can participate in the funeral during the day), except if a person is compelled to do so. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "When any of you gives a shroud to his brother, he should give the best shroud."

When one of them was pointed out, he would lower him into the grave first. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, I will be a witness over these people." He ordered that they be buried with their blood, did not offer their funeral prayer, nor did he bathe them.

Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we migrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the path of Allah, seeking the pleasure of Allah, so our reward became due upon Allah. Some of us passed away in such a state that they did not receive any portion of their reward (in this world). Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) was among them, who was martyred in the Battle of Uhud. Nothing was found to shroud him except a striped sheet. If we covered his head with it, his feet would remain uncovered, and if we covered his feet, his head would remain uncovered. (Seeing this situation) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Cover his head with the sheet and put idhkhir grass on his feet.” Some of us are such whose fruit has ripened and they are harvesting it.

Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you see a funeral and are not able to go with it, then stand for it until it passes by you or is placed down.” The narrator says: Sometimes Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would go ahead of the funeral, so he would sit down, then when he saw it in front of him, he would stand until it was placed down, and sometimes he would go out of sight.
Hadith 531
Sayyida Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: We were forbidden to accompany funeral processions, but it was not made strict upon us.

عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " كُلٌّ قَدْ كَانَ خَمْسًا وَأَرْبَعًا ، فَأُمِرَ بِأَرْبَعٍ " .
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that both four takbirs and five takbirs are established, then he gave the order for (four takbirs).
Hadith 533
Ibn Abi Layla says that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say four takbirs over our funerals. On one funeral, he said five takbirs. When people asked him about it, he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to say five takbirs," or he said: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said five takbirs."
