What is reported about clothing for prayer
Hadith 170
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ؟ قَالَ: «وَكُلُّكُمْ يَجِدُ ثَوْبَيْنِ؟»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Can a man pray in a single garment? He replied: Does each one of you have two garments?
Hadith 171
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: نَهَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ لَيْسَ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a person should pray in a single garment in such a way that no part of the garment is on his shoulder.
Hadith 172
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ مُجَاهِدٍ أَبِي حَرَزَةَ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبِي حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُما فِي مَسْجِدِهِ، وَذَكَرَ بَعْضَ الْحَدِيثِ، قَالَ: وَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي، فَكَانَتْ عَلَيَّ بُرْدَةٌ ذَهَبْتُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهَا فَلَمْ تَبْلُغْ لِي، وَكَانَتْ لَهَا ذَبَاذِبٌ فَنَكَّسْتُهَا، ثُمَّ خَالَفْتُ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهَا، ثُمَّ تَوَاقَصْتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَجِئْتُ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَأَدَارَنِي حَتَّى أَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، وَجَاءَ جَبَّارُ بْنُ صَخْرٍ، فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ، فَقَامَ عَنْ يَسَارِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَخَذْنَا بِيَدَيْهِ جَمِيعًا، فَدَفَعَنَا حَتَّى أَقَامَنَا خَلْفَهُ، فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَرْمُقُنِي وَأَنَا لَا أَشْعُرُ، ثُمَّ فَطِنْتُ، فَقَالَ: هَكَذَا بِيَدِهِ يَعْنِي شُدَّ وَسَطَكَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «يَا جَابِرُ» ، قُلْتُ: لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ: «إِذَا كَانَ وَاسِعًا فَخَالِفْ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ، وَإِذَا كَانَ ضَيِّقًا فَاشْدُدْهُ عَلَى حَقْوِكَ»
‘Ubadah bin Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: One day, my father and I went to Sayyiduna Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) in his mosque. While narrating a hadith, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for prayer. I had a striped sheet over me. I began to fold its edge (so that I could tie it around my neck), but it could not reach there. It had tassels. I turned it over and made its edges opposite each other. I held it at my neck to prevent it from falling. Then I came and stood to the left of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He took me by the hand, turned me around, and made me stand on his right side. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Jabbar bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, performed ablution, and stood to the left of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He took us both by the hands and moved us behind him, making us stand behind him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept looking at me, but I did not realize it. Then I realized, and he was gesturing with his hand, saying: Do it like this, that is, tie it in the middle. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: Jabir! I replied: O Messenger of Allah! I am present. He said: When the cloth is wide, place the right edge over the left shoulder and the left edge over the right shoulder, and if it is narrow, then tie it around the waist.
Hadith 173
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، وَأَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَا: ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ صَلَاةَ حَائِضٍ إِلَّا بِخِمَارٍ»
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty does not accept the prayer of an adult woman without a head covering (dupatta).
Hadith 174
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْلَمَةَ وَهُوَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَنَسًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِي نَعْلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ
Saeed bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) use to pray while wearing shoes? He replied: Yes!
