Avoiding impurities on body and clothes
Hadith 130
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا وَكِيعُ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُجَاهِدًا، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ أَمَّا هَذَا فَكَانَ يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ، وَأَمَّا هَذَا الْآخَرُ فَكَانَ لَا يَسْتَبْرِئُ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ» ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِعَسِيبٍ رَطْبٍ فَشَقَّهُ بِاثْنَيْنِ فَغَرَسَ عَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا وَعَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: «لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يُخَفِّفَ عَنْهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا».
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said: They are being punished, and they are not being punished for something which was difficult to avoid. One of them used to spread gossip, and the other did not protect himself from urine splashes. Then he asked for a fresh twig, split it into two parts, and placed one part on each grave. He then said: As long as these twigs do not dry, perhaps Allah the Exalted will lessen their punishment.
Hadith 131
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَسَنَةَ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَنَا وَعَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ، جَالِسَيْنِ فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفِي يَدِهِ دَرَقَةٌ فَبَالَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَتَكَلَّمْنَا بَيْنَنَا فَقُلْنَا: يَبُولُ كَمَا تَبُولُ الْمَرْأَةُ فَأَتَانَا فَقَالَ: «أَوَمَا تَدْرُونَ مَا لَقِيَ صَاحِبُ بَنِي إِسْرَئِيلَ؟ كَانَ إِذَا أَصَابَهُمْ بَوْلٌ قَرَضُوهُ فَنَهَاهُمْ فَعُذِّبَ فِي قَبْرِهِ».
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Hasnah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I and Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us. In his hand was a shield. He (peace be upon him) sat down and urinated, so we said among ourselves: "You urinate like women (by sitting)." He (peace be upon him) came to us and said: "Do you not know what punishment befell a man from the Children of Israel? When urine would get on their clothes, they used to cut them. This man forbade the Children of Israel from this, so he was punished in the grave."
Hadith 132
حَدَّثَنَا بَحْرُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ لَهِيعَةَ، وَاللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، وَعَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ حَدِيجٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا: هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِي الثَّوْبِ الَّذِي يُجَامِعُهَا فِيهِ؟ فَقَالَتْ: «نَعَمْ إِذَا لَمْ يَرَ فِيهِ أَذًى».
Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that I asked the noble wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her): Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray in the clothes in which he had intercourse? She replied: Yes, if he did not see any impurity on them.
Hadith 133
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُقْرِئِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ، عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى فِي مِرْطٍ مِنْ صُوفٍ وَعَلَيْهَا بَعْضُهُ وَهِيَ حَائِضٌ.
Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in a woolen sheet, part of which was on her (Lady Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her), even though she was menstruating.
Hadith 134
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الْحَجَبِيُّ قَالَ: ثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْأَشْعَثُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يُصَلِّي فِي لُحُفِ نِسَائِهِ.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not use to pray in the beds of his wives.
Hadith 135
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَا: ثَنَا أَبُو حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: كَانَ ضَيْفٌ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَجْنَبَ فَجَعَلَ يَغْسِلُ مَا أَصَابَهُ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِحَتِّهِ.
Hammam bin Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a guest came to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He became junub, so he began to wash the moisture (on the clothes). Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us to scrape it off.
Hadith 136
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: «لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَفْرُكُهُ مِنْ ثَوْبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَيُصَلِّي فِيهِ» قُلْتُ لِلْأَنْصَارِيِّ: تَعْنِي الْجَنَابَةَ؟ قَالَ: فَأَيُّ شَيْءٍ.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I used to scrape semen off the clothes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) would perform prayer in those clothes. Muhammad bin Yahya says: I asked Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari: Is janabah (major ritual impurity) meant? He replied: And what else could be meant?
Hadith 137
حَدَّثَنَا الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَفَّانُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، قَالَ: أَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ أَفْرُكُ الْمَنِيَّ مِنْ ثَوْبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I used to scrape semen off the clothes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) would perform prayer in those very clothes.
Hadith 138
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، قَالَ: ثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا أَصَابَ ثَوْبَهُ الْمَنِيُّ غَسَلَ مَا أَصَابَهُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْبُقَعِ فِي ثَوْبِهِ مِنْ أَثَرِ الْغَسْلِ.
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that semen would get on the clothes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he would wash it off and then go out for prayer, and I used to see the marks left by the washing.
Hadith 139
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُقْرِئِ، وَمَحْمُودُ بْنُ آدَمَ، قَالَا: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أُمِّ قَيْسٍ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِابْنٍ لِي لَمْ يَأْكُلْ الطَّعَامَ فَبَالَ عَلَيْهِ فَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَرَشَّهُ وَقَالَ مَعْمَرٌ وَاللَّيْثُ وَعَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ فِي هَذَا فَنَضَحَهُ.
Sayyida Umm Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I brought my suckling child to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he urinated on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water and sprinkled it. Mu'ammar, Layth, and Amr bin Harith have also narrated this from Zuhri and have mentioned the word «فنضحه».
Hadith 140
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُقْرِئِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُؤْتَى بِالصِّبْيَانِ يَدْعُو لَهُمْ فَبَالَ عَلَيْهِ صَبِيُّ فَأَتْبَعُ الْمَاءَ بَوْلَهُ.
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Children used to be brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he would supplicate for them, and once a child urinated on him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water over the urine.
Hadith 141
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ آدَمَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا، دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَصَلَّى فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي وَمُحَمَّدًا وَلَا تَرْحَمْ مَعَنَا أَحَدًا فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: «لَقَدْ تَحَجَّرْتَ وَاسِعًا» ، فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ بَالَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَعَجَّلَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ فَنَهَاهُمْ وَقَالَ: «أَهْرِيقُوا عَلَيْهِ ذَنُوبًا أَوْ سَجْلًا مِنْ مَاءٍ» ، يَعْنِي بَوْلَهُ وَقَالَ: «إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُمْ مُيَسِّرِينَ وَلَمْ تُبْعَثُوا مُعَسِّرِينَ».
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a Bedouin came to the mosque, and after praying, he said: O Allah! Have mercy on me and on Muhammad (peace be upon him), and do not include anyone else in this mercy. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) turned towards him and said: You have made something vast (mercy) narrow. Shortly after, he urinated in the mosque, and the people rushed towards him, but you (the Prophet) stopped them and said: Pour a bucket of water over the urine. You have been sent to make things easy, not to make them difficult.
Hadith 142
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أُمِّ وَلَدٍ لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ أُطِيلُ ذَيْلِي فَأَمُرُّهُ بِالْمَكَانِ الْقَذَرِ وَالْمَكَانِ النَّظِيفِ فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَتْهَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «يُطَهِّرُهُ مَا بَعْدَهُ».
Ibrahim bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf’s freed slave woman (Hamidah), may Allah have mercy on her, narrates: I used to let the hem of my cloak hang low and would pass through both clean and unclean places, so I asked Lady Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, about this. She replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: After that, the (pure) earth will purify it.
Hadith 143
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، وَشَرِيكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ لَنَا طُرُقًا مُنْتِنَةً فَتُمْطِرُ فَقَالَ: «أَلَيْسَ بَعْدَهَا طَرِيقٌ أَطْيَبُ مِنْهَا؟» ، قَالَتْ: بَلَى قَالَ: «فَهَذَا بِهَذَا».
A woman from Banu Abdul Ashhal narrates that I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): Our paths are dirty and it rains (which causes mud, so what should we do)? He said: Does a clean path not come after that? She said: Yes, it does! He said: That clean path is its substitute.
