Humran bin Aban (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution. He poured water on his hands and washed them three times, then rinsed his mouth three times and sniffed water into his nose and blew it out, then washed his face three times, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times, then washed his left hand in the same way, wiped his head, washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, and washed his left foot in the same way. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution like mine, and after performing ablution like mine, he said: Whoever performs ablution like mine, then offers two rak‘ahs (prayer of greeting the ablution) without being distracted by worldly thoughts, all his previous sins will be forgiven.

After performing the Fajr prayer, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Rahbah (a place in Kufa), sat there, and asked his servant to bring water. The servant brought a vessel of water and a basin. Abdu Khayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We sat and watched as he took the vessel with his right hand and poured water over his left hand, washing both hands. Again, he took the vessel with his right hand, poured water over his left hand, and washed both hands. A third time, he took the vessel with his right hand, poured water over his left hand, and washed both hands. Thus, he washed his hands three times. Abdu Khayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He did not put his hands into the vessel until he had washed them three times. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, rinsed his mouth full, put water into his nose, and cleaned his nose three times with his left hand. Then he washed his face three times, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times, then washed his left hand up to the elbow three times. Then he dipped his right hand well into the water vessel, took it out with water, and wiped his head once with both hands. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, poured water over his right foot, and washed it three times with his left hand. Then, with his right hand, he poured water over his left foot and washed it three times with his left hand. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, filled it with water, and drank it. Then he said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform ablution in this manner. Whoever wishes to see the ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this is it.
