Dislike of facing the Qiblah for relieving oneself and cleaning
Hadith 29
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَطَّانُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَوَكِيعٌ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، قَالَ يُوسُفُ وَاللَّفْظُ لِلضَّرِيرِ قَالُوا: ثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لِسَلْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَدْ عَلَّمَكُمْ نَبِيُّكُمْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى الْخَرَاءَةَ؟ قَالَ: «أَجَلْ لَقَدْ نَهَانَا أَنْ نَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ نَسْتَنْجِيَ بِأَيْمَانِنَا أَوْ يَسْتَنْجِيَ أَحَدُنَا بِأَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثَةِ أَحْجَارٍ وَأَنْ لَا يَسْتَنْجِيَ أَحَدُنَا بِرَجِيعٍ أَوْ عَظْمٍ».
Abdur Rahman bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that someone said to Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him): Your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has taught you everything, even the manner of relieving yourselves. He replied: Yes! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us from facing the Qiblah while relieving ourselves, from cleaning ourselves with the right hand, from using less than three stones, and from cleaning ourselves with dung or bones.
Hadith 30
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَعُثْمَانُ، قَالَ: ثَنِي عُقْبَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ خَالِدٍ قَالَ: ثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: ثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ، عَنْ وَاسِعِ بْنِ حَبَّانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُما قَالَ: «رَقِيتُ فَوْقَ بَيْتِ حَفْصَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْضِي الْحَاجَةَ مُسْتَقْبِلَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ مُسْتَدْبِرَ الْكَعْبَةِ».
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I climbed onto the roof of (my sister) Sayyidah Hafsah’s (may Allah be pleased with her) house, and I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) facing Bayt al-Maqdis and with his back towards the Ka’bah while relieving himself.
Hadith 31
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْأَزْهَرِ قَالَ: ثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: ثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: ثَنِي أَبَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ نَهَانَا أَنْ نَسْتَدْبِرَ الْقِبْلَةَ أَوْ نَسْتَقْبِلَهَا بِفُرُوجِنَا إِذَا أَهْرَقْنَا الْمَاءَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ يَبُولُ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ».
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from turning our backs towards the Qiblah or facing our private parts towards it while urinating. He says: Then I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one year before his death, urinating while facing the Qiblah.
Hadith 32
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ مَرْوَانَ الْأَصْفَرِ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وأَنَاخَ رَاحِلَتَهُ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ يَبُولُ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْتُ: أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ نُهِيَ عَنْ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: «بَلَى إِنَّمَا نُهِيَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فِي الْفَضَاءِ فَإِذَا كَانَ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ مَنْ يَسْتُرُكَ فَلَا بَأْسَ».
Marwan Asfar, may Allah have mercy on him, says: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, he made his mount sit facing the Qiblah, then he turned towards it and sat down to urinate. I said: Abu Abdur Rahman! Has it not been prohibited (to urinate facing the Qiblah)? He replied: Yes! In open space it is prohibited, but if there is a barrier between you and the Qiblah, then there is no harm.
