Purification for the Unconscious
Hadith 13
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: ثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَقُلْتُ لَهَا: أَلَا تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَتْ: بَلَى ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا: لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» ، قَالَتْ: فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ: «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا: لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» ، فَفَعَلْنَا قَالَتْ: فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ: «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا: لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» ، فَفَعَلْنَا قَالَتْ: فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ: «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا: لَا، هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ: وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ: فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ.
Ubaydullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I went to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and requested, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" She replied, "Why not! When his illness intensified, he asked, 'Have the people performed the prayer?' We replied, 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Place water for me in a basin (for bathing).' She says: We placed the water, and he performed ghusl (ritual bath). When he tried to stand up, he fell unconscious. Then, when he regained consciousness, he asked, 'Have the companions performed the prayer?' We said, 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' He said, 'Place water for me in a basin.' So we placed the water, and he performed ghusl. When he tried to stand up, he fell unconscious. Then, when he regained consciousness, he asked, 'Have the people performed the prayer?' We replied, 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Place water for me in a basin.' So we placed the water, and she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ghusl. When he tried to stand up, he fell unconscious. Then, when he regained consciousness, he asked, 'Have the companions performed the prayer?' We replied, 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' The people were sitting in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the Isha prayer. She says: He sent a message to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer.
