Abdullah bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I and two men from my tribe came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); I think one man was also from Banu Asad. He sent both of them to the other side of the city, saying, "You are strong and sturdy, so go there and serve the religion." He went to the toilet, then came back and asked for water. He took a handful from it and washed his hands, and began to recite the Qur'an. We found it strange, so he (may Allah be pleased with him) explained: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after relieving himself and coming out of the toilet, would recite the Qur'an, eat meat with us, and nothing except major impurity (janabah) would prevent him from these acts." Yahya says: Imam Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say about this hadith: "It is both well-known and rejected to us, because when 'Amr met Abdullah bin Salamah, at that time Abdullah was already old."
