Hadith 768
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، قَالَ : ثنا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : ثني حُمَيْدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّهَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، " أَنَّ امْرَأَةً تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا فَاشْتَكَتْ عَيْنَهَا ، فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَذَكَرُوا الْكُحْلَ ، فَقَالُوا : نَخَافُ عَلَى عَيْنِهَا ، قَالَ : " قَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ تَمْكُثُ فِي بَيْتِهَا فِي شَرِّ أَحْلاسِهَا أَوْ فِي أَحْلاسِهَا فِي شَرِّ بَيْتِهَا حَوْلا ، فَإِذَا مَرَّ كَلْبٌ رَمَتْ بِبَعْرَةٍ ، أَفَلا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا " .
Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a woman's husband passed away, and during her waiting period ('iddah), her eyes began to hurt. People mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), mentioning the use of kohl (antimony), and said: "We fear for her eyesight." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman (in the days of ignorance) used to stay in her house for a whole year in dirty clothes," or he said: "in dirty clothes and in a dirty house, and when a dog would pass by, she would throw dung (to mark the end of her waiting period), and now she cannot even complete four months and ten days."
