The wife of Sayyiduna Aws bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the brother of Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Khawlah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: One day he (Aws bin Samit) came to me and, in anger, said something to me. I replied back, so he became upset and said: "You are to me like the back of my mother." Then he left and sat in the gathering of his people. Later, he returned (home) and wanted to have intercourse with me, but I refused. He pulled me, so I resisted and overpowered him, just as a woman overpowers a weak husband. I said: "By the One in Whose hand is Khawlah's soul, you cannot come near me until Allah decides between me and you." Then I went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to complain, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is your husband and also your cousin, so fear Allah and treat him kindly." I remained firm on my stance until the Qur'an was revealed: "Allah has indeed heard the statement of her who pleads with you concerning her husband..." (Al-Mujadilah: 1) (Allah has heard the statement of the woman who disputes with you concerning her husband) until the verse about expiation was completed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to free a slave." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! By Allah, he does not have a slave to free." He said: "Tell him to fast for two consecutive months." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! He is very old and unable to fast." He said: "Then feed sixty poor people." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! He does not have anything to feed them." He said: "We will give him a basket of dates as assistance." (The narrator says:) 'Iraq' refers to a large basket that holds thirty sa' of dates. I (Khawlah bint Tha'labah) said: "I will give one basket." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have done well, so let him give it as charity."
