Hadith 716
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُقْرِئِ ، قَالَ : ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : إِنَّا فِي الْقَوْمِ ، إِذْ قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ : إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَرَأْ فِيَّ رَأْيَكَ ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ ، فَقَالَ : زَوِّجْنِيهَا ، قَالَ : " اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ، قَالَ : فَذَهَبَ وَلَمْ يَجِئْ بِشَيْءٍ وَلا بِخَاتَمٍ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ، قَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ : أَمَعَكَ مِنْ سُوَرِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : فَزَوَّجَهُ بِمَا مَعَهُ مِنْ سُوَرِ الْقُرْآنِ " .
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were sitting with some people when a woman said: O Messenger of Allah! I offer myself to you, please express your opinion about me. A man stood up and said: Marry her to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Go and look for something, even if it is an iron ring. The narrator says: He went and brought neither an iron ring nor anything else. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: Do you know any portion of the Qur’an by heart? He said: Yes! The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married her to him in exchange for the portions of the Qur’an that he knew by heart.
