Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah bin Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Rabee’ah bin Al-Harith and Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib gathered together and said: By Allah! If we send these two boys, meaning myself (Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah) and Fadl bin Abbas, to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), perhaps he will appoint them over the collection of charity (sadaqat). They narrated the whole incident. He says: We presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you so that you may appoint us over the collection of charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: These (charities) are the impurities of the people, and indeed it is not permissible for Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his family to take charity. Call Mahmiyah bin Jaz’ (who was appointed over the collection of ‘ushr) and Abu Sufyan bin Al-Harith to me. Both of them came, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Mahmiyah: Marry your daughter to this boy, meaning Fadl. So he married her to him. Then he said to Abu Sufyan: Marry your daughter to this boy. So he married her to him as well. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Mahmiyah: Pay their dowry from the khums.
