Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when someone was in debt, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would not lead his funeral prayer. A deceased person was brought, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Does he have any debt?" The people said: "Yes, he owes two dinars." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Offer the funeral prayer of your companion." Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! The dinars are my responsibility." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer. When Allah Almighty granted prosperity to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "I am more entitled to the believers than their own selves. Whoever (among the Muslims) leaves behind a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it is the right of his heirs."
