Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah, he stood and delivered a sermon to us: O people! Any (peace or security) agreement from the time of ignorance has been strengthened by Islam. There is no oath (of alliance) in Islam; Muslims should help each other against opponents. Even the lowest-ranking Muslim can grant protection, and likewise, a resident from afar can break protection. If a military detachment separates from the main army for a mission, it should share the spoils of war with its main army. No believer should be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever. The blood money for a disbeliever is half that of a believer. There is neither “jalb” nor “jab”; rather, zakat should be taken from the place of residence of the people. (Jalb means that the collector sits in the office to receive zakat, and jab means that those giving zakat take their wealth far from its original place.)
