Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the Children of Israel there was a man (his name is unknown) who had killed ninety-nine innocent people. Then he (feeling remorseful) set out to ask about his situation. He came to a monk and asked him, "Is there any way for repentance to be accepted for this sin?" The monk replied, "No." Upon hearing this, he killed the monk as well (thus completing one hundred murders). Then he began to ask others. Eventually, another monk told him, "Go to such-and-such town." (He had not even reached halfway when) death overtook him. As he was dying, he turned his chest towards that town. Then the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment began to dispute among themselves (as to who should take him). But Allah Almighty commanded the town called Nasrah (to which he was going for repentance) to come closer to his corpse, and commanded the other town (from which he had set out) to move farther away from his corpse. Then Allah Almighty said to the angels, "Now measure the distance between the two." (When they measured,) they found that the town (to which he was going for repentance) was one hand-span closer to his corpse, so he was forgiven.

Safwan bin Muhriz Mazni narrated that I was holding the hand of Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a man came forward and asked, "What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the private conversation (munajat) between Allah and His servant on the Day of Resurrection?" Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Allah will bring the believer close to Him, will cover him with His screen, and will conceal him. Allah will say to him, 'Do you remember such-and-such sin? Do you remember such-and-such sin?' The believer will say, 'Yes, O my Lord.' When he will confess his sins and will think that he is ruined, Allah will say, 'I concealed your sins for you in the world, and today I forgive you.' Then he will be given the record of his good deeds. But as for the disbelievers and hypocrites, witnesses (the angels, the prophets, and all jinn and mankind) will say about them, 'These are the ones who lied against their Lord.' Behold! The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers."
