Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has appointed an angel in the womb. The angel says, "O Lord! Now it is a drop of fluid. O Lord! Now it has become a clot. O Lord! Now it has become a lump of flesh." Then, when Allah wills to complete its creation, the angel says, "Is it male or female? Is it wretched or blessed? How much provision is destined for it and what is its lifespan?" Thus, all these matters are written by the angel while the child is still in the mother's womb.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that we were with a funeral at Baqi’ al-Gharqad. Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and sat down, and we also sat around him. He had a stick with him with which he began to scratch the ground. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is none among you, or no soul, whose place in Paradise and Hell has not been written, and also whether he will be fortunate or unfortunate. Upon this, a companion asked: O Messenger of Allah! Then why should we not rely on our destiny and give up doing deeds? Because the one whose name is written among the fortunate will surely turn towards good deeds, and the one whose name is among the unfortunate will surely go towards evil. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The fact is that those whose names are among the fortunate find ease in doing good deeds, and the unfortunate find ease in doing evil deeds. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: “As for him who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), and believes in the best (reward), We will make smooth for him the path of ease (to Paradise).” (Al-Lail: 5-7)

Hazrat Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate that a person (i.e., he himself) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Have the people of Paradise already been distinguished from the people of Hell?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes." He asked, "Then why should those who act, perform deeds?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Every person does the deeds for which he was created or for which ease has been made for him."

Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A man may appear to do the deeds of the people of Paradise throughout his life, while in reality he is among the people of Hell. And a man may appear to do the deeds of the people of Hell, while in reality he is among the people of Paradise.
